GEORGETOWN, Texas - Downpours nor the University of Texas at
Dallas could stop the Pirates from extending their unbeaten streak
to four on a rain soaked afternoon in Georgetown. Southwestern
needed just one goal in the opening minutes of the game to improve
to 4-0 on the season. The Comets fall to 0-2-2.
After a lengthy rain delay and conversations about whether or not
the game was even going to be played, the Pirates hit the field and
got right to work scoring on a perfectly placed cross by sophomore
Jillian Curran that lofted over the defense to senior A.J. Andreola
who headed it into the back of the net.
The Pirates had many opportunities throughout the duration of the
game, but just couldn’t seem to make the same connection they
did earlier in the contest. Southwestern had 15 shots and nine
corners on the afternoon.
Stellar defense kept Southwestern ahead as the Comets made some
streaking attacks. Senior Andi Miller beat UTD to a couple 50/50
balls in the backfield and out maneuvered the UTD forwards on other
occasions to hold them at bay while first-year goalkeeper Sarah
Nonaka made a diving save on one break-a-way and slid to steal the
ball from UTD’s Makanani who had dribbled past the SU defense
and was one-on-one with Nonaka.
All-in-all the Pirates held UTD to seven shots, many of which that
came in the final 20 minutes, and zero corners during the game.
Southwestern will put their undefeated record on the line again on
Sunday against a very talented University of Texas at Tyler team.
Game time is scheduled for 1:00 in Georgetown.
