WILLIAM TAYLOR OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior on the men's swimming team from Austin, Texas has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 29.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

A music education major who aspires to become a high school or college choir director, Taylor volunteers his time to work with high school choir students. As part of his Schools, Society and Diversity class this semester, he also started working with the Getsemani Community Center, which is a part of the First United Methodist Church in Georgetown, Texas.

“We’ve helped primarily in the Quail Valley community, providing food and fellowship for families in need,” Taylor says. “I think it’s important to connect with people, especially those who might be struggling.”

The Getsemani Community Center works to engage with the greater Georgetown area by hosting a number of meaningful and impactful events such as the Christmas Gift Donations Drive being held by the Quail Valley Ministry. In addition, volunteers grew 975 pounds of produce in 2020 to donate to the Helping Hands of Georgetown.

“I would say the most rewarding part is just building new friendships in the community and making other people smile,” Taylor says. “When we’re making others happy, we’re happy.”
