BRENNA RUETHER OF UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS, a sophomore catcher on the softball team from Columbus, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning March 14.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

This season when Ruether isn't behind home plate or in the classroom, she is leading her team’s service activity. She and other UST Softball players are responsible for raising money and gathering supplies for Star of Hope Houston. This helped women and children who were affected by domestic violence receive basic necessities. Ruether says this experience helped humble her, by giving back to those in need.

Ruether is very passionate about giving back. She recognizes the responsibility of being a student-athlete, and how it affects her life, specifically, as a role model to younger kids that look up to her.

“While we are here to get an education and play our sport that we love, it's important to be good people,” she added. “We can demonstrate that by giving back to those less fortunate in our community.”

As a member of the very first St. Thomas Softball team established in 2021, Ruether believes in doing what is right. She cites that good character and actions are contagious. This extends to softball by bringing positive energy to her teammates. Furthermore, Ruether looks forward to continuing this donation project for years to come.
